How Squirrels Get Into Your Home
Squirrels have incredibly strong teeth that grow continuously throughout their lives. They need to chew constantly to keep their teeth worn down, and unfortunately, your home's fascia, soffit, and roof materials are perfect chewing targets. Common entry methods include:
- Chewing through fascia boards at gable peaks and roof returns
- Gnawing through soffit panels — especially at corners where panels meet
- Exploiting existing gaps at roof returns, plumbing vents, and gable vents
- Chewing through roof shingles and plywood directly into the attic
The Danger of Squirrels in Your Attic
Beyond the entry damage, squirrels in your attic create serious hazards. The most dangerous is chewing electrical wires — exposed wires in an attic full of dry insulation is a recipe for a house fire. Squirrels also tear up insulation for nesting material, leave droppings throughout the attic space, and can create water damage by compromising your roof's integrity at entry points.
Signs of Squirrels in Your Attic
- Daytime scratching and scurrying — squirrels are most active early morning and late afternoon
- Chew marks on fascia, soffit, or around gable vents
- Wood chips or insulation debris on the ground below the roofline
- Squirrels repeatedly seen on your roof or running along gutters
- Staining or damage around entry points on the exterior
