Copperhead Removal in the Triangle

Copperheads in the Triangle

The copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix) is the most commonly encountered venomous snake in the Raleigh-Triangle area and across North Carolina. They're found in both rural and suburban environments, including backyards, gardens, woodpiles, and along home foundations. Copperhead bites account for more venomous snakebites in the eastern United States than any other species.

Despite their reputation, copperheads are generally not aggressive. Most bites occur when people accidentally step on or reach near a copperhead they didn't see — their camouflage is exceptionally effective in leaf litter.

How to Identify a Copperhead

  • Color: Tan, copper, or pinkish-brown base color
  • Pattern: Dark hourglass-shaped crossbands (wider on the sides, narrow across the back)
  • Head: Triangular, distinctly wider than the neck. Copper-colored head gives them their name
  • Eyes: Vertical (cat-like) pupils — a trait shared by all NC pit vipers
  • Size: Adults typically 24-36 inches long
  • Behavior: Often freeze and rely on camouflage rather than fleeing. May vibrate their tail in leaves (mimicking a rattlesnake)

Copperhead vs. Rat Snake

Young black rat snakes have a blotched pattern that homeowners frequently confuse with copperheads. Key differences: rat snakes have round pupils (not vertical), their blotches are more irregular and lack the distinctive hourglass shape, and they have a more slender body shape. Rat snakes are completely harmless and are actually beneficial — they eat rodents and are one of the best natural pest control species around your home.

What to Do If You See a Copperhead

Keep your distance and call a professional. Do not attempt to kill or capture the snake — most snakebites occur when people try to handle or kill a snake. Rapid Wildlife Removal provides emergency snake removal services and can respond quickly to copperhead encounters in Raleigh, Cary, Apex, Holly Springs, and Fuquay-Varina.

If bitten, seek medical attention immediately. Remove jewelry or tight clothing near the bite area. Do not apply ice, tourniquets, or attempt to suck out venom — these are outdated methods that can cause additional harm.

Reducing Copperhead Risk on Your Property

  • Clear leaf litter and debris — copperheads are nearly invisible in leaves
  • Move woodpiles away from the house — wood piles are a favorite hiding spot
  • Control rodent populations — rodents attract copperheads. See our rodent control services
  • Trim vegetation along foundations — keep a clear perimeter around your home
  • Use outdoor lighting at night — copperheads are most active at dusk and after dark during warmer months
