Foxes in the Triangle
Both red foxes and gray foxes are common throughout the Raleigh-Triangle area. These beautiful animals are generally shy and pose minimal risk to humans, but they can become a nuisance when they den under decks or porches, raid chicken coops, or become habituated to human food sources. Gray foxes are unique among canines in their ability to climb trees, which occasionally leads to unusual encounters around homes.
Red Fox vs. Gray Fox
- Red fox: Larger (8-15 lbs), distinctive orange-red fur with white-tipped tail, black legs. Prefers open areas and edges of woodlands
- Gray fox: Smaller (7-13 lbs), grizzled gray fur with reddish patches on neck and legs. Prefers wooded areas, can climb trees. More common in the Triangle than red foxes
Common Fox Problems
- Denning under structures — foxes den under decks, porches, and sheds, especially when raising kits in spring
- Chicken coop raids — foxes are skilled predators of poultry
- Pet food theft — outdoor pet food and bird feeders attract foxes
- Mange concerns — foxes can carry sarcoptic mange, which causes hair loss and can spread to domestic dogs
Fox Removal
Rapid Wildlife Removal provides humane fox trapping and exclusion services. For foxes denning under structures, we use one-way doors and exclusion barriers after ensuring all juveniles are able to exit on their own. We also help homeowners secure chicken coops and eliminate attractants that draw foxes to their property.
