Copperhead Snakes in the Triangle
Copperheads are the most commonly encountered venomous snake in NC. In suburban neighborhoods, they're found in mulch beds, under porches, near rock walls, in woodpiles, and along creek buffers. Properties in Apex, Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina, and western Cary see the most activity.
Identifying Copperheads
- Color: Tan/copper body with darker hourglass-shaped crossbands
- Head: Triangular, wider than neck
- Eyes: Vertical (cat-like) pupils
- Size: Typically 2-3 feet
- Behavior: Often freeze and rely on camouflage
