Bat Colonies in NC Homes
All NC bat species are federally protected. A colony in your attic creates real problems — accumulated guano causes respiratory health risks, strong odors, and structural staining. Bat removal requires exclusion (not trapping), and is prohibited May 1 – July 31.
Signs of a Bat Colony
- Small dark droppings below gable vents or eaves
- Brown staining at entry points
- Squeaking sounds at dusk or dawn
- Bats visible exiting at sunset
- Strong ammonia-like odor
